Laleh Haverim is a multimedia journalist from Beverly Hills, California.

One of the happiest moments I experienced as a journalist was after I made a short documentary “Friends with the Enemy.”  George Key, a WWII veteran who I interviewed, confided in me about his experience.  The first time we met, he found the comfort to share his painful story.  The third time we met he agreed to convey his testimony on video and to be in my documentary.

One month after finishing the documentary and uploading it to Youtube, I received this email:

Hi Laleh, My name is Joel and I'm George Key's grandson.  He was telling me about being interviewed by you, so I watched the video.  I really enjoyed part 1 -- mostly because of what I got to hear him talk about.  He refuses to share these memories with the family for the most part, so thank you for capturing this part of our family's history on film in such a thoughtful way.”

It was after reading this that I realized why George confided in me.   It was trust.  It was honesty.  It was true care and compassion for George as a human being that allowed him to tell his story.  I approach documentary journalism with truth and empathy, which fills me with satisfaction.  My caring and perceptive nature carries over into the newsroom with my colleagues and in my personal life with my friends and families as well.

My ideal career is one in which I can be involved in producing multimedia pieces that inspire young people and inform society about relevant and significant issues.  Over the last two years, documentary style journalism has become my passion.  To understand how George's grandson and family feel, and to see my work, please browse through my website.
